Using Plone for Creating Portals
Presented by Paul Trapani of XT Group (http://www.xtny.net)

A web-based portal is a great way to share knowledge in a business or organization.

Plone makes a great choice as a portal solution for the following reasons:

-quick deployment for intranet portals
-can be scaled up as needs grow
-can publish to the Internet if the need arises
-software cost savings over proprietary solutions like Sharepoint
-allows building solutions using an agile development strategy
-because Plone is object based, it's easy to include documents or other attachments to your content
-very intuitive for non-technical users to use
-easy to make custom content types
-built in support for accessibility
-lots of pre-existing solutions out there

This presentation will discuss basic concepts and strategies in portal creation. There will be a demonstration a portal project hat was recently created using Plone.

Arguably, all websites should be capturing user data.

How much data should be captured and how it should be captured are up for discussion.

Have you ever encountered a data entry form that pops over the website you're viewing, asking for your name and email address? If yes, you've encountered someone else who's thinking about this issue and you should know enough to be able to discuss the relevant issues with the other people on your website development team.

Because if you understand who your website visitors are and what they're doing on your site, you can make DATA-DRIVEN, unemotional decisions about your website and your organization's communication policies. Believe me, if you want to capture your client's FULL attention regarding your website suggestions, tell the client your suggestions are data-driven.

With that in mind, I set out two years ago to create best practices for visitor data capture while using Plone for the websites of our clients. Plone has unique strengths, including email confirmation to register, flexible portlets for data capture, and easy integration with other programs.

We began with Google Analytics, created goals, and then branched out into integrating other tools including www.autowebbusiness.com and www.salesforce.com.

At our June 11, 2009 meeting I will present my lessons learned with capturing user data via Plone websites. A couple of relevant examples are:

Welcome to the Plone NYC Users Group! I'm your host, Robert Burgoyne.

Our January 2009 Meeting will be held in Manhattan at the offices of Silver Leaf Partners, near Grand Central Station.

At the meeting, we'll review our ideas for our www.PloneNYC.org website and actively work to implement some of the ideas. Wi-Fi will be available so bring your laptop and be prepared to do some work.

We will also put together a calendar of the meetups we'll host in 2009 and discuss how to reach out to other groups. At our December, 2008 meeting we agreed that we would theme our 2009 meetups based on the following audiences:

Plone Developers
Plone Integrators
Business Analysts and Salespeople
Entrepreneurs
Non-Profits

There will also be time to discuss current technical challenges or other ideas we are each working on.

Please attend and spread the word!
